Sharing some wisdom from today’s birthday boy, @on Sharing some wisdom from today’s birthday boy, @onlywonmc 🎂
One of the biggest lessons from sharing Far East Deep South around the country is that our stories connect us more than they divide us.
We may come from different backgrounds, but there’s so much we can learn from one another through both the triumphs and struggles in our shared history.
Especially during AAPI Heritage Month, we’re reminded that understanding the past can help us create a better future together. ❤️

“Chinese people in Mississippi?! What happened the “Chinese people in Mississippi?! What happened there?” is what we were all thinking when we walked into the Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum in Cleveland, MS and discovered the history we never knew about Chinese families in the Deep South.

FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH started as a journey to uncover our family's hidden roots in the Mississippi Delta but it opened the door to a forgotten chapter of American history that so many people never knew existed.

During #AAPIHeritageMonth, we’d love for you to watch, share, and help keep these stories alive. ❤️

🤝During Jim Crow, Chinese grocery stores extended interest-free credit to Black families, built on trust, relationships, and mutual need. Black and Asian communities were often shut out of the white banking system.

These stories, shared by the community itself, show that Black history is layered, interconnected, and deeply human.

🙏 We are deeply grateful for the participation, le 🙏 We are deeply grateful for the participation, leadership, and allyship of these former Mississippi mayors, Robert LeFlore Sr., Levon Jackson @darryljohnson834, who so generously shared their voices and histories in #FarEastDeepSouth. Their decades of public service and commitment to their communities continue to inspire us, and we honor their enduring legacy this #BlackHistoryMonth.

While Mayor Johnson continues his important work preserving and sharing African American culture and history through the @MoundBayouMuseum, we remember Mayor Jackson and Mayor LeFlore with gratitude and respect. Though they passed away in 2019 and 2021, their stories, wisdom, and impact live on through the communities they served and the history they helped preserve.

👉 Swipe to meet them.

The film powerfully captures the richness and complexity of the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s, illuminating stories too often left out of the historical record including the presence and contributions of Chinese communities in the South, also explored in our film, #FarEastDeepSouth.

On a previous episode of @lddpodcast, our director @larissalammusic and producer @onlywonmc discussed why Sinners matters and why its portrayal of this layered, inclusive history feels especially relevant today.

On MLK Day, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. an On MLK Day, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights legacy that opened doors for all communities of color, including Asian Americans.
While making Far East Deep South, we saw how Chinese families in Mississippi were also shaped by segregation, resilience, and the long road toward belonging. Dr. King’s leadership didn’t just change laws, it changed what was possible for all.
Our histories and path to civil rights are connected. Thank you Dr. King for your enduring example 🇺🇸🤍

December 17, 1943 marked the repeal of the Chinese December 17, 1943 marked the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act — a law that barred Chinese immigrants from citizenship and coming to the U.S. as laborers for more than 60 years.
But repeal did not mean equality. Severe restrictions and discrimination remained after the repeal.
While making Far East Deep South, we saw how this law shaped real lives in the Jim Crow South and beyond— determining who could enter the country, who could stay, and whether families could ever be reunited.
Learn more about how the Chinese Exclusion Act separated families like the Chiu family and its lasting impact on Chinese Americans by watching Far East Deep South.
