Larissa Lam and Baldwin Chiu Join “Chinese American Genealogy: Silver Linings” as Guest Instructors

We’re excited to announce that Far East Deep South filmmakers Larissa Lam and Baldwin Chiu will be guest instructors for the virtual course “Chinese American Genealogy: Silver Linings,” taking place June 23–27, hosted by the GRIP Genealogy Institute through the National Genealogical Society.

Their session, “Behind the Camera at Far East Deep South,” will offer a behind-the-scenes look at their personal journey uncovering Baldwin’s family roots and the hidden history of Chinese Americans in the Deep South. They’ll share how storytelling through film intersects with genealogical research, and how their discoveries helped connect family history with broader historical events and policies.

This week-long course provides an in-depth exploration of Chinese American genealogy—from early gold miners and railroad builders to the years of exclusion and the immigration records left behind. It also covers post-World War II family reunification through the War Brides Act and the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, and guidance on researching family origins in China.

Whether you’re just beginning your family history journey or are deep into your research, no prior experience is required to participate.

We’re honored to contribute to this important educational effort to preserve and uplift Chinese American stories.
