Here are some Frequently Asked Questions we get about hosting a Far East Deep South screening and discussion. If you still have a question, feel free to email booking [at] fareastdeepsouth.com or use our contact form.
Q: How do virtual screenings and discussions work?
A: There are a few different ways we can set up a screening depending on how many people will be watching and how the event is being promoted. Typically, the film is made available for people to view during a specified window of time to people who have pre-registered to receive the link. Then, we have a live video discussion and Q&A after that window via Zoom or other platform. We can customize the experience to fit the needs of your organization and/or event. Fill out our booking form to schedule a phone consultation and we can discuss what would work best for you.
Q: Can you do a screening with both an in-person and a virtual component?
A: We have also done many hybrid screenings with both in-person and virtual elements due to budget or logistical reasons. There are many ways we can work with groups to create an impactful experience. Here are a few examples:
- In-person screening at a venue with live virtual Q&A with our filmmakers. The venue would need to have the technical capabilities to be able to stream the Q&A live on the screen via Zoom or other platform. The film can be screened with the Q&A immediately following the end of the film or the Q&A can be scheduled for a different day. We have even done screenings where Baldwin Chiu was in-person at the venue and Larissa Lam joined in virtually or vice versa.
- In-person screening with a pre-recorded message or Q&A with filmmakers shown before or after the film.
- Virtual screening window over a few days to view the film with the Q&A or panel discussion in-person on a specified date and time.
Q: How much will a screening and discussion cost?
A: It depends on how many people will be attending, length of screening window, the purpose of the screening (i.e. student group vs. conference), whether travel is involved and other parameters. Please contact us or fill out our booking form with any preliminary info and we can chat more about options.
Q: What kind of file can you provide to screen the film in-person?
A: We can provide an HD screening link, digital file .mov or .mp4, DVD, Blu-ray or DCP. Exhibition license fee for the film may vary depending on the format. Anything that needs to be shipped may require additional costs and transit time.
Q: Is your film closed captioned? Do you have an audio description version?
A: Yes, we have a closed captioned and an audio description version.
Q: Besides English, what language subtitles can be shown with your film?
We have Chinese subtitles in simplified and traditional. We also have Spanish subtitles. If shown virtually, each viewer may have the option to select languages depending on the set up. For in-person screenings, you can only select one language to display and it would only be available in streaming or digital file format.
Q: Can we stream the film on a Zoom meeting?
A: We do not recommend this because Zoom does not have the bandwidth to stream long video cleanly. We want viewers to be able see the video and hear the audio clearly because we’ve crafted a story with many important details we don’t want people to miss.
Q: I’m a teacher, can I screen the film for my classroom?
A: Yes, we have different streaming and DVD educational licenses available through our distributor, New Day Films. Our film is also available to stream on Kanopy with university access. If you need to explore other options, please contact us.
A: Do you have marketing materials to help us promote the event?
A: Yes! We provide an event planning checklist and media tool kit to help you promote the event. We provide digital files of our film poster, flyer templates and other artwork. We can even help customize graphics with your event info and logo, if needed. When you book a screening and discussion with us, you are also getting expert event consultation.
Q: Can we stream the film on YouTube for a screening?
A: No. Due to agreements we have with our distributors, we cannot stream our film publicly.
Q: Can I have just director Larissa Lam, and/or producer Baldwin Chiu speak at an event without a screening?
A: Yes. You can still contact them using the same booking form here.
Q: Can Larissa Lam and/or Baldwin Chiu aka Only Won perform as part of a screening or discussion?
A: Yes. In addition to being filmmakers, Larissa and Baldwin are accomplished music artists. They sometimes perform a song before the screening of the film as a warm-up. This will be dependent on the sound requirements and time allotted for the program.
Q: I need to present the idea of a screening to my leadership team. Do you have a fancy proposal, I can send them?
A: Yes, we have a fancy proposal with graphics, bios, accolades, etc. we can send. We can even customize it, if needed. We also have a simple one-sheet. Contact us to request.
Q: Do you do screenings for libraries?
A: Yes. We love working with libraries. Larissa’s mom was a librarian so they hold a special place in her heart.
Q: Do you do screenings for Employee Resource Groups?
A. Yes. We have worked with many corporate diversity programs and multicultural groups. One of the things that our film has done is bring groups together that normally may not hold programs together such as a company’s Asian ERG and Black ERG. We also love working with groups to help them build community internally but also engage with the community around them.
Q: Do you do screenings for conferences?
A. Yes. We have done screenings for numerous conferences for groups such as the National Genealogical Society, Association of Asian Studies, United Chinese Americans and Ascend. We have also done workshops and participated in panel discussions.
Q: Do you do screenings with churches?
A: Yes. We love doing screenings with churches!
Q. Do you do weddings and bar mitzvahs?
A: I don’t see why not.
