“Its intimate, as-it-happened cinéma-vérité style draws you in, and soon this family trip takes the twists and turns of a compelling detective story. A surprising, sobering history lesson… The Boston Globe

“A gorgeous and moving story that unveils an important part of American history.” – Edward Douglas, The Weekend Warrior

Discover the Untold Story of the Mississippi Chinese in FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH
Welcome to the official website of FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH, the award-winning documentary feature that uncovers the little-known history of the Chinese American community in Mississippi. Follow the Chiu family as they embark on an emotional journey to the Deep South in search of their lost family roots. Along the way, they connect with local residents and historians who reveal the complex racial dynamics of the segregated South—and the vital role of Chinese immigrants in Mississippi during that era. The film explores the lasting impact of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and highlights how deeply Chinese American families, like the Chius, are woven into the fabric of American history.

FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH made its US Broadcast Premiere on the World Channel (PBS) series “America ReFramed”. Visit our screenings page to find out where you can watch our film.
