“Its intimate, as-it-happened cinéma-vérité style draws you in, and soon this family trip takes the twists and turns of a compelling detective story. A surprising, sobering history lesson… The Boston Globe

“FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH is a beautiful, emotional journey. ⭐⭐⭐ Four out of four stars.”MovieGuide

“A gorgeous and moving story that unveils an important part of American history.” – Edward Douglas, The Weekend Warrior

“FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH is more than a movie. It’s a life changing experience.” – Jimmy Cheung, Ascend

Welcome to the official website of FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH, the award-winning documentary feature film that follows the Chiu family on a surprising journey through Mississippi in search of their lost family history. Along the way, they meet a diverse group of local residents and historians, who shed light on the racially complex history of the early Chinese in the segregated South. Their emotional journey also leads them to discover how exclusionary immigration laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 impacted their family and they learn how deep their roots run in America.

FAR EAST DEEP SOUTH made its US Broadcast Premiere on the World Channel (PBS) series “America ReFramed”. Visit our screenings page to find out where you can watch our film.
